After meeting with the team at Advanced Technology Institute, i am very excited and proud to announce that they have received a grant from the National Science Foundation for a year long project called “Digital Culture: Developing the Next Digital Human”. It will be my next project since I am leaving my job to help with the project. The project is looking at the interaction between humans and technology and the importance of the future of human connection and interaction. I am very excited.
The idea behind Digital Culture is that we need to give a big, broad signal to our young people about what it is that we think is desirable and what we think they should do in order to give them a better start in life. I think the best way for people to understand what they are being asked to do is to see it for yourself by going to a demonstration. You will be amazed.
The Digital Culture Lab of Virginia Beach is a new, not-for-profit high school that is experimenting with giving students hands-on experience in how to make physical objects and software, as well as exploring all of the exciting and new technologies available today. In order to get students into this program, they must register with the school and then give a presentation to the school’s Board of Visitors and be rated for their presentation skills.
It is a bit of a daunting proposition for students. Not being able to actually touch the technology is just a bit daunting. It gets even more daunting when you add up all the different kinds of things that you will be doing during your hands-on tour.
Like most schools, Virginia Beach’s program is extremely expensive. Because the school is very small and the classes are very limited, the only people who have to pay are your classmates, the school’s board of visitors, and the teacher you will meet over the course of the day. It’s not completely open admissions, either. A student can only be admitted if they are a current student of the school, if they have the grades to enroll, and if they are in the right program.
At the advanced technology institute you will learn how to program a device that will allow you to communicate with the school. It is said that this device is a little bit like an “open-source supercomputer,” one that allows you to communicate with other computers. The device is called a “Tiny Computer” and the program that is taught to you has to be programmed in C.
