The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car. It’s also why it’s so difficult to change our habits.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
It’s true that our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions often control our behavior, but they don’t necessarily make us do what we do. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions control us so we don’t have to stop and think about what we are doing, but they don’t make us do what we do.

This is not necessarily a bad thing, but when we are not aware of our own habits, routines, impulses and reactions, they can control us and become our enemies. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little metacognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
What’s worse, is when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them. A person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, Hmm every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas. That could be coincidence, but I think it’s a sign of insanity.
I think its a sign of insanity because that is the exact way that you can’t control your habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. If you don’t even realize that you’re doing them, then you are free to do whatever you want with the results. That is the difference between being able to exercise self-awareness and insanity.
What I find interesting is that these are exactly the same phrases that you hear all the time on the radio, where people say, “I’m on a diet, I’m on a diet, I’m on a diet.” Well, if you actually have a diet, you can’t really say you’re on a diet since you’re in the habit of eating.
I once attended a conference on behavioral economics. The entire session was about the psychology of habits, or the psychology of how someone changes their routines, impulses, and reactions. The speakers were all convinced that the reason people are poor is because they have poor habits and routines. It doesn’t matter if you know it or not, habits and routines are always there. And because you cant change your habits, routines, or impulses, youre stuck with them.
I think this is a great point. I think it’s worth pointing out that the reason people are poor is because of poor habits and routines. It’s not because they don’t learn to budget. It’s because they fail to learn how to exercise better. It’s because they have bad habits and routines. They have bad habits and routines because they lack self-awareness.
Our habits and routines are often the root of our unhappiness and stress. We go through life unaware of how we affect others and how our actions impact them, and this is largely because we don’t have much self-awareness. So we do things that hurt other people and make ourselves unhappy.
