The first time I read The Fear City by David Foster Wallace, I was struck by the idea that this is the true story of a little girl who lives in a city where everyone is afraid of everything and everyone else is afraid of every other thing. I thought to myself, “You know, it’s a great idea. I’d make this book.
That wasn’t the first time I thought of this book. When I was 8 years old and my family moved into a big old old house in the suburbs of New Jersey, I would spend the summer with my mother. It was a cold, cold, miserable summer, and I was in a deep depression. I used to think my mom was going to die of cancer any day. She actually came out of the hospital with a small tumor on her liver and went back home to care for her.
I don’t remember exactly when I came to realize that my mother wasn’t being well. I do remember that when she was living alone I would go over there to see if she was still alive, but I also remember that one time I asked her to marry me. I said I wanted to live with her, and she said no. I knew she was lying, but I couldn’t leave, so I ran away.
I went to visit my mom at home, but I wasnt allowed back in. My best friend had already started staying with her.
In the book, fear city is a post-apocalyptic town that has been wiped out. Everything is overgrown and there is a lot of violence and madness. It’s a very different place that we can imagine than the one that we know. I think there’s a lot of potential in this book, and I’m looking forward to coming back to it in the future.
I’m curious to see how that book ends. It’s been a while since I read a book that really made sense, but the world building and the story and all the characters were very good. And I liked the ending.
